People’s Choice Awards 2014: Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder joke about breakup in ‘awkward’ onstage moment

The ‘Vampire Diaries’ pair joked about the demise of their real-life romance while accepting the award for ‘Best Chemistry.’

Who said exes who still play a couple on television can't be good friends?

If their "Best Chemistry" win was any indication, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are still getting along great. The "Vampire Diaries" couple took home the award after delivering a lighthearted speech about their complicated romance at the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday night.

"We started dating on the show," Dobrev, 25, said.
Former couple Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are still close friends, and joked about their ‘chemistry’ on and off screen while accepting the People’s Choice Award.
"We started dating in real life," Somerhalder, 35, added, finishing her sentence.

"And then we broke up in real life," the Canadian actress said, while her counterpart joked "and yet our characters are still dating on the show."
‘It’s a good thing it’s not awkward,’ Dobrev joked, after explaining that she and Somerhalder split in real life, but remain a couple on their CW show.
"It's a good thing it's not awkward," she added.

The two finished their rehearsed exchange with an awkward look, but then broke into laughter and ended their acceptance speech with a kiss on the cheek.

It's no secret that the former couple — who ended their relationship in May after more than three years of dating — has an ongoing friendship.
Dobrev, 25, and Somerhalder, 35, may have ended their relationship, but their characters’ chemistry still registers with fans of ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ The ex-couple appeared onstage to receive the award.
In September Somerhalder tweeted a photo of his ex-girlfriend's Cosmopolitan magazine cover.

"In a store this morning — who do I see?" he captioned the photo. "One word: Stunning."
Somerhalder and Dobrev went public with their off-screen romance in 2011, but split in May of 2013 after more than three years together.
And a month after Dobrev helped Somerhalder deliver his dog's eight puppies.

In November it was also rumored that the pair had been quietly hooking up again, after Dobrev briefly romanced dancer Derek Hough, brother of her close friend Julianne Hough.

The short-lived union with the "Dancing with the Stars" hunk fizzled out due to distance, sources told Us Weekly, as his show tapes in Los Angeles while the CW teen drama tapes in Atlanta.
